Prix Preview: Something for Everyone at St. Pete’s Biggest Race

January 18, 2023 by Samantha Bond Richman No Comments

Springtime in St. Petersburg comes early. Trees, flowers, and everything green throw their pollen to the wind like confetti, heralding the season’s arrival. Snowbirds head back north; humidity is on the rise. And the intense sound of “angry bees buzzing” signal yet another springtime tradition: IndyCars and their high-revving engines making practice runs. The trucks, trailers, and roadway detours downtown, along the bayfront, and around Albert Whitted Airport mean just one thing…it’s time for the Firestone St. Petersburg Grand Prix, presented by RP Funding. This year’s racing, and myriad other events, take place March 3-5.

For those new to the sport and rusty on the French language, Grand Prix literally means “grand prize,” so the term is applied to a great many types of races.… Read More

St. Pete Pier Wins Global Award for Excellence

November 17, 2022 by Shelly Wilson No Comments

In October, the City of St. Petersburg announced that the St. Pete Pier was selected as one of six winners of the Urban Land Institute’s 2022 Global Awards for Excellence, a top honor recognizing the best new urban designs in the world. This year’s winners include two from North America, two from Europe, and two from Asia Pacific. The St. Pete Pier was one of just two designs in the United States to be awarded.

“This is an incredible, meaningful accomplishment for our city and our iconic waterfront,” said Mayor Ken Welch. “The ULI Global Awards for Excellence win puts the St.… Read More

Our Neighborhood School Is Back in Session

Our Neighborhood School Is Back in Session

North Shore Elementary PTA and Friends of North Shore Elementary (FNSE) worked tirelessly over this summer with the faculty and staff of our historic school to ensure a flawless start to the 2019-2020 school year for our students. Leading up to the beginning of the school year, both of these groups supported several important teacher, family, and student programs.

The Squire Session is an opportunity for incoming kindergarteners to meet teachers and each other and have a pre-school assessment. The PTA provided breakfast and coffee for parents, held a uniform swap shop, offered a selection of spirit gear, and gave parents an opportunity to join PTA.… Read More

Behind the Scenes at Kennedy Space Center

July 20, 2016 by adminNEJ No Comments

Did you know that the growing medium used to grow lettuce on the International Space Station (ISS) is exactly the same as the clay ‘dirt’ between first and third base at the Tropicana Dome?  Did you know NASA has developed robots that astronauts recently controlled on the earth’s surface from the ISS?

Things are really hopping these days at NASA, Space X, ULA, and Blue Horizon facilities all across the U.S. Nowhere is that more evident than at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC)  where there is always a rocket on a launch pad these days with NASA, Space X, and ULA having long-term projects related to space science and exploration, including commercial missions as well as missions to deep space and Mars.… Read More

#100FILMS #SunscreenFilmFestival

May 27, 2014 by adminNEJ No Comments

Recently I took part in a fantastic art show called 100 Films. The show was in conjunction with the Sunscreen Film Festival, which I knew very little of. So, naturally I did a little digging and found out more. Sunscreen has been happening since 2006 and is now in its 9th year of providing a taste of what’s going on with local filmmakers. This year’s festival encourages its attendees to participate in all workshops, lectures and film screenings which makes it far more interactive and promotes community within our pool of local talent.

100 Films is an art show that was held at Blue Lucy Gallery in the heart of the Central Arts District.… Read More

Eugenia Woods Goes… Stays Home!

January 7, 2014 by adminNEJ No Comments

Did you have a happy holiday?

Are you tired of hearing that? Admit it, did you put your Grinch face on this season? Are you just holly-jollied out, and weary of cheers and jubilant expressions that match the vivid glittered napkin that hugs your bubbly? Wouldn’t you much rather cozy up to a hot buttered rum and read that new book you’ve been trying to start? I bet the cat would love it if you would sit still long enough for him to nest upon. I myself am tired of events and cheer in general. It’s not that I’m an unhappy person, don’t misunderstand me.… Read More

To Fashion Week TampaBay!

July 22, 2013 by adminNEJ No Comments

We all have images of New York Fashion Week, with the glamour, glitz, press and endless poses of men and women looking rather serious in their conglomerations of color and pattern. I don’t know about you, but I have often (more times than I’d like to admit) imagined myself in those scenarios, dripping with duds that say “admire me” and have photographers stumble over themselves to snap the perfect shot of me adjusting my ankle strap. Did you even know we have a fashion scene here, let alone our very own Fashion Week? We sure do, and boy is it amping up for the sixth year of being a central pulse for our local fashionistas to gather.… Read More
